The fluorite octahedron
Ask what the little eight-sided stones by the register are and you’ll get one of the shop’s oldest answers: fluorite octahedra, and they’ve been on that counter longer than most of us have worked here.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a mineral that grows in cubes but cleaves along its natural planes into perfect eight-faced forms — two pyramids joined at the base. The octahedra you see aren’t carved; they’re split along lines the crystal already contained. Green, purple, and the prized blue-and-purple banded pieces all come off the same rough.
In modern practice fluorite is associated with focus and clear thinking — the traditional nickname is “the genius stone.” In the shop’s own tradition, it’s the classic first crystal: cheap, geometric enough to delight a kid, and genuinely lovely on a windowsill.
The old site had a page devoted to these little stones, which tells you something about how long the shop has loved them. Some fixtures earn their spot.
